PASO BABY PAGE

In 2009 FCER received 10 Pasos that were being starved.  Four of the five mares were pregnant.  Now, in early 2010, the babies are arriving.  Canella was first on Jan. 10th with a colt.  Both Mom and baby are okay.  Next came Spirit - producing a filly on Feb. 26th.  Mom is okay - the baby is not.  Angel has a deformed jaw that may require surgery.  And then came Tango, a beautiful colt, from Cascade.  This time the baby is fine, but Mom retained placenta and had to be flushed out 3 times.  Spice is still the hold out.  Big as a barn and looking uncomfortable, she's till not giving up that foal.   We're waiting patiently......

Canella and Tanner

Tanner, the first foal to make an appearance, arrived in fine form on January 10th.  Unsteady on  his feet, but willing to try, Tanner's long pasterns and the mud teamed up to make it difficult for him.  But, he persevered, and runs, jumps, bucks and kicks with the best of them now.

Spirit's Angel

On Feb. 26th, Spirit presented a beautiful baby girl.  Only one problem though, the baby's mouth was deformed, with the upper jaw being appx. an inch shorter than the bottom, and her nose going off to one side.   She could suckle, although somewhat sloppy.     X-rays revealed that the problem is skeletal.  BUT - miracles do happen, and Angels nose started to straighten out on it's own!  Now at a week old, she's much improved!  Both Angel and Spirit are at the vet's while the Dr. monitors Angels improvement.  Surgery may still be required, but we're waiting to see how much Mother Nature can do on her own.  And the Dr. has donated all his expenses for this little Angel!
Newborn

Angel's New Face

On February 26th, 2010,  little Angel was born with a misaligned upper jaw.  X-rays at birth revealed that the molars lined up, but the front incisors did not. The condition was not something that would improve with time.  Humane euthanasia seemed to be the best thing to do, as the expense of surgery was way beyond the scope of possibility. It appeared that a very sad day was upon us.  But miracles do happen every once in awhile, and one happened right then.  Dr. Quintana stepped in to say that he would cover not only the expenses of surgery, but Angel's care until she was healed!  And so it was that Angel and her mom stayed at Animal Haven Clinic until she was 6 months old and was pronounced ready for surgery.   The date was set for Friday, Sept. 10th.  The operation was scheduled to last 4 hours.  The procedure involved cutting the jaw apart, taking a piece of her rib and filling in the gap.  Then reattaching the jaw with a plate, screws and pins.  The saw required to do this extremely delicate surgery cost over $10,00!  But that was yet another miracle when the manufacturer's rep loaned the saw at no charge.  The surgery was a remarkable success, as you can see by the photo.  The 6 weeks following the surgery are critical to make sure the bone will heal.  So far, so good.  Angel is indeed being watched over by angels.

Cascade and Tango

Tango was born to Cascade on March 1, 2010.  Happy and heatlhy, he soon figured out which end of Mom had the milk, and how to get there.  Tango is a beautiful little guy, and loves to romp!
